ABOUT THE SHAR PEI
His name means “sand skin,” referring to his distinct, bristle-like coat. But that’s not the only thing unusual about the Chinese Shar-Pei. He’s a solid mass of loose wrinkles — folds of skin that make him look like he’s wearing a bulky, oversized suit.
PERSONALITY
The Shar-Pei is an alert and independent dog. He is extremely devoted to his family.
A calm and confident dog, he seems to develop an intuitive understanding of his owner or family.
As devoted as he is, the Shar-Pei is also independent and strong willed. He is protective of his family — making for an excellent guard dog — and will respond to threats.
NUTRITION
A high-quality dog food appropriate to the dog’s age (puppy, adult, or senior) will have all the nutrients the Chinese Shar-Pei needs. Treats can be an important aid in training, but giving too many can cause obesity.

CARE
Individual dogs Shar-Pei vary in their exercise needs. This is a very adaptable breed. They can do well with a very active owner, walking every day, or living in an apartment with a few short walks.
GROOMING
The Chinese Shar-Pei requires only minimal grooming. They need a bath only every month or so.
Nails should be trimmed once a week, ideally using a grinder.
The ears should be cleaned weekly, but don’t overdo the products.
